I read the first few pages of "Color and Light by Gurney" You can grab it off amazon bro. I hope you find the book helpful.

Do you use photoshop alot or do you have any other programs you like to work in?

Nowadays I only use photoshop. I use to use sketchbook pro, manga studio, Illustrator, and painter. But I've found a way to create brushes that immitate or is better than those programs. It doesn't really matter what you use though.
